Staining
Wood and Concrete Staining in Madison, MS
Staining is an ideal way to enrich the look of your home or business, as well as protect it from harsh environmental elements such as UV rays and moisture.
Chapter 01
Gray wood is wood that has stopped being protected
Bare wood takes the weather directly. UV rays gray the surface of fences, timbers and doors, and moisture follows the same path, soaking into end grain and joints until boards cup, split or darken. In Madison, Rankin and Hinds County the sun and the humidity both work on a finish all year, so a stained surface left alone slowly loses the protection it was given.
Timbers on a Craftsman entry, a pair of wooden doors under a portico, a backyard fence: each one shows the same early signs. The color flattens, the grain starts to look dry, and the wood feels rougher under a hand. Catching that stage early means a lighter job, because the wood underneath is still sound and still ready to take a fresh finish.

Washed first, then stained into the grain
Anthony's Painting stains doors, cabinets, furniture, fences, concrete, and more, and an outdoor surface starts with a wash. In the crew's own words: "We also pressure wash most surfaces before staining/painting to ensure the best end result." Mildew, pollen and old surface film all keep stain from reaching the material, so the surface has to be clean before any color goes on.
Indoors, the same care applies on a smaller scale. Cabinets and furniture are cleaned of the oils and dust that gather on them, any failing finish is sanded back, and the stain goes on in even passes so the grain stays visible instead of being buried. Concrete takes stain differently from wood, so the surface is read first and the approach chosen to suit it.
Chapter 03
Why stain, when paint is the easier answer
Stain soaks into the wood where paint sits on top of it. That is the whole difference: a stained surface keeps its grain and its texture, and the color lives in the fibers rather than in a film that can lift and peel. Staining is an ideal way to enrich the look of your home or business, as well as protect it from harsh environmental elements such as UV rays and moisture.
Stained finishes do ask for upkeep, and the crew says so plainly: ongoing maintenance goes with them. The upside is that a sound stained surface can be refreshed in place, which is far less work than stripping a failed finish and starting over. Stain on a finished house
Timbers and entry doors, drag the line
On the Craftsman entry the brick went white while the gable timbers were stained. The double doors under the portico were restained as well.

Doors that crack in the sun are covered on the refinish doors page, the siding and trim around them on exterior painting, and more finished houses are in the gallery.
